A powerhouse of knowledge

The NordAllianz is home to numerous institutes and scientific centres for research and development. The regional labour market thus has highly-educated workers at its disposal. The many world-class research institutes and business incubators offer the ideal basis for start-ups and company expansions.

Rich in research

  • Technical University Munich. With its faculties in chemistry, computer science,  mechanical engineering, mathematics and physics, the Garching Campus is clearly focused on technology and the natural sciences. Additional facilities such as the new research reactor FRM-II (a modern source of neutrons), the research reactor Munich (FRM-I or "Atom Egg"), the Maier-Leibnitz-Laboratory with its research focus on nuclear and particle physics, and the Central Institute for Medical Technology (Zentralinstitut für Medizintechnik) make Garching a melting pot of innovative work.
  • The Ludwig Maximilian University has a focus on experimental physics (atomic physics, laser physics, high-energy physics and nuclear physics). In addition, it operates the branch office for neutron diffraction, in the department of crystallography of the Faculty for Geosciences.
  • The Max Planck Institutes für Astrophysics, for Extraterrestral Physics, for Plasma Physics and for Quantum Optics are located at the research park in Garching. >
  • The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is building an institute for IT security. Research groups will be established and a chair for IT security created at the Technical University Munich.
  • The Helmholtz Center Munich develops scientific concepts for the protection of human health and the natural basis of life for now and the future.
  • In applied research projects at the Walther Meissner Institute, special methods and processees for low temperature research, cryogenics, novel components for superconducting electronics, magnetoelectronics und quantum information processing as well as nanostructuring technologies are developed.
  • The GE Technology Center is the European Global Research Center of GE General Electric. With more than 150 scientists and engineers, research is being conducted in these main areas: alternative energy sources, electrical systems for regenerative energy sources, special sensors and advanced processes for medicine, such as magnetic resonance imaging and molecular resonance.
